BOBOS2

Bobo’s Fish and Chips

I use 100% local caught fish, and the types of fish I use changes daily depending on the catch. We are very fortunate here on Isla that the local fish selection (Snapper, Grouper, Tile, Trigger) are all ideal for a traditional Fish & Chips. The filets are all white, tender, juicy, flakey and tasty. I use a very light crisp beer batter, made with my favourite Mexican beer, Sol. The Fish is served with a generous portion of crisp fries and a side of handmade Tartar sauce.

For those that don’t do fish, well you are in luck because I make crisp delicious Chicken Wings, by the pound. (Wings may be my favourite Food). …Handmade crushed tortilla crusted chicken fingers …. a healthy Grilled Chicken breast Burger… the “Crunchy” Chicken Burger (Killer), ….Poutine a la Bobo, ….and the ½ lb handmade Beef Burger topped the way you like it….or the “Bobo-Burger” as it is called on the menu. As you can tell, I like my food. I stand by my words. If it is not good and I don’t like it, it won’t be on the menu!

Bobo’s is conveniently located in Centro between Playa Sol and Av. Hidalgo on Av . Matamoros. Bobo’s will be open Nov-June Monday to Saturday. Bobo’s is expanding this year to include a bar/dining area next door for your dining pleasure.

Drop by and say hi if you are in the neighbourhood.

Regards,

Brian Kerr

Isla Mujeres, MX .- The Secretary of the Navy of Mexico aided three people who were aboard a boat named ‘Cheryl Linn’ which was drifting about 156.4 kilometers north of Isla Mujeres.

In a statement, that the Naval Region 5 headquarters received last night, in Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo, was the report of the boat ‘Cheryl Linn’ , the report stated that the boat was adrift because the propeller system was failing.

Almost immediately the  Maritime Search and Rescue Navy of Mexico was activated, they provided a coastal patrol directed to the area reported, in order to provide relief and safeguard human life at sea.

On Monday, approximately at 07:40 hours, the unit of the Navy of Mexico located the requested relief boat with three people aboard that match the names of Cesar Marin Trapp, Michael Morrison and Eric Ferguson, a Honduran, Nicaraguan and American, respectively.

From the Island Home

From The Island Home

By Fidel Villanueva Madrid

We could mention many from Isla Mujeres that were true artists in working wood until it floated and traveled upon the waves. The first artists recorded date from the end of the XIX century. They came from Tuxpan and became Caribbean islanders. Their last name was Becerra, and the oldest, Heliodoro, came with some of his brothers to teach us the technique for working chicle, that chewable resin that the unforgettable General Lopez de Santa Ana brought into fashion in the United States when he was Mr. Adam’s prisoner, there on the other side of the Rio Grande, in the third decade of the XIX century.
The Becerra were also very good Ribera Carpenters, and since what was left over was good quality wood and what was missing was how to transport the forest and marine wealth from the eastern coast, they began to repair the existing boats on Chacmuchuch island, and ended up making new ones and teaching the islanders of that time how to make them.
Other famous surnames in this difficult trade were Martínez, Magaña, Celis, Delgado, Pastrana, Ávalos, Osorio, Ávila, Sánchez, Trejo, Figueroa, Polanco, Galué, Rodríguez and Velázquez, all natives of this beautiful Isla Mujeres, where also notable “foreign” Ribera Carpenters found work such as the Maestro Gabourel from Chetumal, or the Maestro Santana from Holbox, to mention a few.
Juan de la Rosa Burgos was one of their outstanding pupils. De la Rosa Burgos passed the trade on to his son Rafael Burgos Ávila, who in turn left the tradition in the hands of his son Álvaro Burgos Sabido, better known –and therefore remembered- as the “Maestro Alva”, and he in turn taught the trade to our dear friend Mario Burgos Sánchez, who is the last Ribera Carpenter alive today.
After sixty years of labor, Mario Burgos does not appear to give up when faced with the reality of modern ships. He has kept two true wooden relics, the “Alvarito” and the “Don Mario”, and he spends his time giving them maintenance so they will continue to float, tied to his dock in Varadero de Burgos, from which not even “Wilma” could separate them. Memories bubble in his mind of when his father built boats such as the “Sirena del Mar”, the “Carmelina”, the “Maley”, the “Francisco Sarabia”, the “Rubí”, the “Manuel Fernando”, the “Cisne”, the “Novia del Mar”, the “Sultana del Mar”, the “Dama Elegante”, as well as the reconstruction of the legendary “Carmita”.

MapChick

We started out writing a guidebook to Cancun, which had to have a map, Perry is a graphic designer, so the visual aspect had to be there. We realized as we got into the map that we may not need a book at all, why not turn this into a “guide map”. Can-Do Maps & Guides was born, our first edition of the Cancun map was published in 1997, and we’ve been adding new maps and updating them ever since.

We hope you enjoy our creations and they help to make your vacation extra special!
